Energy Targets

UK

In order to tackle climate change the EU has set a target for the UK to produce 15% of all energy consumed from renewable sources by 2020. This compares to 3% in 2009.

In order to meet this, around 30-40% of our electricity would have to come from renewables, as transportation fuel and heat are difficult to obtain from renewable sources.

Scotland

The Scottish Government has set a target to produce 100% of electricity consumed to be produced from renewable sources by 2020.

The aim is to produce twice as much electricity as we consume, just over half from renewable sources.

First Minister Alex Salmond pledged to move “still faster and further” to secure Scotland’s place as the Green Energy Powerhouse of Europe.

Scotland’s renewable energy target was previously set at the equivalent of 80% electricity consumption, with a 31% interim target for 2011. Having now surpassed this year’s target, the First Minister is keen to aim higher.
