In November 2008, construction commenced on the two new Vestas V52 wind turbines at Balquhindachy farm, near Methlick in Aberdeenshire. These turbines are identical to the existing turbine on site, and will bring the overall generation capacity of the site to 2.55MW of green, renewable electricity. This is enough to meet the annual electricity demand of over 1,500 households in the local area, and offset over 6,000 tonnes of harmful greenhouse gas emissions every year.
Construction from start to finish took under a week, helped partly by the beautiful clear weather. The new turbines are currently being subjected to a comprehensive commissioning and testing phase, where they are synchronised with the local electricity transmission network. This stage is nearing completion, and it is expected that the turbines will be generating electricity into the grid by the end of January.
